Composers are towering creatures with an unnerving, lanky figure. Their bodies are composed of an organic, porcelain-like shell and resilient muscle tissues, with horn-like protrusions and dangling ribbons of flesh. Holes of random size are formed in their faces and bodies. Their long, slender arms end in spindly hooked fingers which they use to grab up prey. They emit a constant low hum with intermittent whistling that emanates from the holes in their chests.
Behavior
Composers may be found standing or wandering within their designated areas, humming ominously. Due to their lack of hearing, they rely solely on sight to detect prey. When they spot an enemy or a player, they will cry out and begin to chase after the target, attempting to capture them with their hooked appendages. Despite their tall stature, Composers can squeeze through larger doorways. Their size prevents them from entering standard-sized doors, but they will reach through doorways to attempt to grab players.
Grab: When a player or enemy gets too close, the Composer will reach out with it's long arms, attempting to grab with it's skeletal hands.
If successful, the Composer will "eat" the target by inserting them into its chest cavity, which instantly kills the player.
Smack: Occasionally, it will swing its right arm in a wide arc, sweeping from right to left.
Stomp (AOE): If a player is directly behind a Composer at close range, it will slam its foot down, creating an area-of-effect attack around itself.
Strategy
Combat
The only weapons Composers are vulnerable to are the Rocket Launcher (destroying them with a single rocket) and REDACTION Grenade. Otherwise, they will only become hostile to being hit by any weapon and are stunned momentarily by high-damage weapons.
Lacking a Rocket Launcher or [REDACTION] Grenades, as will be the case when visiting Flathill for the first time, there are no options available for fighting Composers.
Non-combat
Avoid Composers as much as possible. Sneak around and be aware of where they are.
If spotted, players must find somewhere to hide, typically in a vent or through a standard size door.
Stay away from doorways, as Composers can reach inside and still attack or grab players. Sometimes, they will attempt this multiple times, if they catch sight of you again after moving away from the door.
If cornered, players may be able to avoid its grasp by circling around it. Maintaining distance is key to avoid being grabbed.
Lore
A single Composer can be found in Cascade Laboratories. It resides in a locked containment cell, where it can be found groaning loudly and tightly hugging itself in a corner. The internal cell walls bears evidence of impact damage.
This Composer is missing its shoulder protrusions, which can be discovered on a piece of research equipment early on in the Adjustment Wing. A nearby Hologram from Dr. Manse describes how it's speculated that the horns allow Composers to be connected to a larger hivemind. It can then be surmised that the Composer in containment is experiencing intense distress and loneliness with the removal of its horns.
Composers in the Hydroplant cannot exit from the building they spawn in, even when the doors are opened.
Composers will appear in Cloud Reactor during the Fog weather event.
Trivia
The Composer's deafness is likely a reference to Ludwig van Beethoven, a famous deaf composer.
Prior to the early access release, Slushie Bombs could freeze Composers.
At one point, this was changed to slowing them down and making them unable to attack, before granting them immunity to freezing entirely.
Composers can technically take damage, but they have 9,999,999 health on every body part, so they are practically impossible to kill via conventional means.
Before 0.10.0, which added the ability to kill them with the Rocket Launcher, if a Composer was killed with cheats, it dropped Security Robot loot as a placeholder.
