The setting of Abiotic Factor is the GATE Cascade Research Facility and connected Portal Worlds. It is one of several Facilities operated by GATE.

Restricted Zone
The GATE Cascade Restricted Zone is the blanket term used to describe the restricted area on the surface surrounding GATE Cascade proper. One can infer that it is patrolled by GATE Security personnel. The only significant feature is the absence of any notable landmarks, as well as the presence of cameras concealed in some foliage. A solitary road leads to the entrance to Cascade, which is disguised as a small mining site. This is where Lance, a guard, drives the player at the beginning of the Introduction.
Concealed Entry Shack
The shack which conceals a security checkpoint and an elevator is located in a depression surrounded by rocks, and is camouflaged as an early modern period homestead, used for mining. Outside the shack, one can find an outhouse (which is usable). The outside of the shack notably has a shutter, a camera and an intercom, through which Jackson inspects the player before granting entry. Inside, Jackson sits behind a round desk, with several CCTV Monitors and a fully stocked Arms Locker behind him. On the desk, the player character aquires the GATE Pal before continuing to the interior.
Radiation Screening
After heading down some stairs through a radiation screening arch, one can find two doors. One way leads to a restriced area of Violet Clearance, the other to Tracy who advises the player character to equip a nearby Hard Hat. Afterwards, they are free to proceed to the nearby elevator.

Cafeteria & Kitchen
The player begins the game arriving by elevator in the Cafeteria. The immediate area consists of seating as well as a bathrooms, with one containing a small janitor's closet. Sitting next to two vending machines is Dr. Thule. A large wall of reinforced glass with a set of double doors blocks progress further in. To progress, the player must enter a vent in a Storage Room next to the elevator.
The kitchen behind the doors as well as the security station are inaccessible until the player unlocks them after travelling through maintenance. Once done, the kitchen area, freezer, breakroom, and security station become accessible.
The Kitchen contains basic cooking utensils, as well as the first slashing weapon, the knife. Several Pests occupy the area, whose meat may be cooked on a stovetop near a small roof collapse, which also contains the rare Cooked Porkchop. This is the only cooking station in the game that works without repair or a power supply. A walk-in freezer containing a tub of Ice Cream is adjacent to the Kitchen. To continue further, one must unlock the shutters with the button near the stovetop.
Now in the Hallway, players may unlock the glass doors leading to the seating area. On the opposite side, behind the door to the Tram Hub, Dr. Jager [sic] may be found. Directly adjacent is the security station, which contains an additional flashlight and leads to the break room.
The break room contains the game's first long sofa for sleeping as well as the first Refrigerator. On the coffee table some PC cases can be found, which must be broken in order to make one's first Crafting Table, as well as the Energy Brick necessary to unlock the door to the Tram Hub. At the back of the room, a shortcut door leading back into the kitchen may be unlocked.
Obtaining an Energy Brick via crafting, the player may set it into the damaged receptacle next to the door ahead and proceed after a fight with a Peccary.
Maintenance
Maintenance consists of a few Vents, one of which connects to a ventilation maintenance room. It contains a dead Peccary and a live Carbuncle. Following the path ahead will lead to the first Pest, which must ordinarily be defeated with a Throw Net and a stomp. The following vents terminate in a long, square concrete room, filled with unopenable crates and wall-mounted Metal Pipes, which are an ingredient required for making a Crafting Table. This area also contains a Flashlight and an Email Terminal containing the recipe for the Shiv. This is also the earliers possible base location due to the three Power Outlets in the area.
