The inventory is Abiotic Factor is where players can store and organize their items. The Player Inventory allows the player to carry items on their own. Inventory slots are also available in Container objects, Loot Spill bags, and also in some vehicles.

Inventories are divided in inventory slots, each one holding a limited number of items of the same type. Some items are able to stack to a large amount, such as Paper Scrap which stacks to 256 units on a single slot. Some items are not stackable, this usually is the case for armor, gear, tools, and packaged items.

Player Inventory

Player inventory areas

The player inventory is only accessible by the player, when pressing the Open Inventory key. The inventory has 3 areas: on the left the blue-shaded panel is the Armor and Gear area, on the bottom there are numbered slots in the hotbar area, and in the center there is the main inventory area. Some of these areas allow only specific types of items, in some affecting the player stats and effects.

On top of the slot limits for the player inventory, the character also has a weight. Items stored in all inventory areas contribute to the weight capacity, but some areas apply weight reduction on stored items.

Upon death, the player keeps items in the armor and gear and hotbar areas, but drops all items in their main inventory slots. These items are stored in the player corpse.

Armor and Gear slots

The slots displayed on the blue-shaded panel, around the character preview, are dedicated to specific type of items. These slots contain a background icon and a tooltip text indicating which kind of item can be equipped in it. When an item is equipped, some of their effects and stats are applied to the equipping player. Equipped items may become inactive once they are broken or depleted of battery.

Main Inventory slots

The main inventory initially starts with 12 slots, representing the character pockets. Additional slots become available once a backpack item is equipped in the backpack gear slot. Some backpacks apply weight reduction in all player inventory slots.

Hotbar slots

The player has 8 slots in their hotbar, being mapped to the numeric keys 1-8 on the keyboard. When the assigned key is pressed, the hotbar slot becomes active, displaying a light outline around it. The active slots can also be changed by using the mouse scroll wheel. If the active slot has any item on it, the player character appears holding the item in hand. Some items can be used or thrown by the player when they are held on hand.

The hotbar slots also have a unique weight reduction effect. Items in these slots weight 75% of their original weight.

When the player has the Fanny Pack trait, two additional slots are available on their hotbar. These slots have are identified by a background image of a fanny pack, but behave the same as original hotbar slots. By the default, these slots are mapped to the keys 9 and 0 on the keyboard.

Container inventory

When the player interacts with Container Objects, the game displays an orange panel with the slots and items in the container. The player can move items between the container inventory and the player inventory either by drag-and-drop, by right-clicking the item, or by using the quick-actions as described:

  • Take all (shortcut key F): moves all items from the container to the player inventory, respecting the slot and stack limits
  • Store all of the same type (shortcut key Q): move items from the player inventory to the container, as long as there is at least one of that item already in the container
  • Store all (shortcut key R): move all items from player inventory to the container, respecting slot and stack limits

When a container gets destroyed or packaged while holding items in its inventory, a Loot Spill bag is created.

Some containers apply radiation reduction on the items stored in their inventory. Some containers apply temperature reduction on items in their inventory.

Loot Spill bag inventory

The Loot Spill bag behaves the same as a container object, but it only allows items to be removed from it. All empty slots in its inventory are blocked from use with a cross mark. Once all items are removed from the spill bag, it disappears.

Vehicle inventory

Some Vehicles, such as the Forklift and Platform Cart offer an inventory which can be moved around the facilities. This inventory behaves in the same way as container objects.
