Shades are found scattered throughout The Night Realm, often mirroring locations in the Security Sector with large pools of blood. It's unknown what Shades represent exactly; they mirror both living and dead characters, not all are human. New Alice dialogue suggests that Shades are the souls of the living that become trapped inside the Night Realm.

Notable Shades

While most Shades are GATE personnel wearing Night Helmets, there are multiple unique instances.

  • A Lab Rat can be seen overlooking another Lab Rat's corpse. Notably said corpse is inside of an Ornate Crate as an ersatz coffin.
  • A Shade kneeling in front of the Ink Well that doesn't wear a Night Helmet.
  • Sister of the Unlost has a unique shade sitting in the branches of a tree.
  • A Bogman can be seen locked in a large prison cell.
  • A Gatekeeper Jotun can be found leaning against a wall, although they appear to be a corpse with a partial Shade overlay donning a Night Helmet.
  • Dr. Cahn in Shade form can be found overlooking a vista.

Dialogue

All Shades except the one sitting near the Ink Well and the one on the vista respond exclusively in groans. Under unknown circumstances the Ink Well Shade will scream and disappear into a column of blackened leaves, never returning.

Trivia

  • Dr. Cahn's Shade is the only one that can speak. His dialogue is the same as in the Security Sector.
  • The Shade locked behind bars on an upper hallway mirrors a collapsed ceiling in the Security Sector.
  • The Shade Bogman was previously a Yeti, but was replaced in the Dark Energy Update.
  • In Alice Hong's new dialogue, she speaks of her soul being elsewhere despite her body being in Office Sector, likely due to being attacked by the Reaper.
    • "I... I thought I was there... but I'm.... I'm still here... am I?... I'm here... ? ... but... she's... there."
    • "I locked it in ... with everyone else ... Am I ... there too?"
    • "I'll follow you soon... Uh, through Manufacturing...... When I'm back... When I've returned... from where I am."
