IC-0860, otherwise known as the Twinning Worm, is a parasitic invertebrate closely resembling in appearance a Velvet Worm.

What makes this creature of note is it's rather perplexing life cycle, and it's potential varied application for material synthesis, weapons development, and espionage. Research is carefully regulated due to the danger presented by infection.

IC-0860 infects its victims through attaching to them as a leech would. Over the course of an hour, it will force its internal organs into the host. After which the remaining husk will release and fall to the ground. Infected meat is a secondary vector.

The infection will remain dormant until the host is physically exhausted. After which, sleeping will trigger the next stage.

IC-0860 will cause the host to split, as though conferring asexual reproduction to the host. What is most curious is that this will extend to anything the host is wearing. This is of particular danger to security officers who like to sleep with a pistol under their pillows.

This Twin will then seek to find a secluded area in which to lay a clutch of eggs. After which it will return and attempt to eliminate the host, taking their place. It will otherwise make no such effort to harm the host unless attacked.

The eggs will hatch after approximately three days, and resemble a mass of frog eggs.

IC-0860 will attempt to remain inconspicuous, but will become aggressive if attacked, discovered, or if spotted in the presence of the host. It appears to have a nominal psychic ability to know when it is known.

It should be noted, that once the host has been twinned, this does not end the infection. They will continue to produce Twins in their sleep until the infection has been purged.
